Clinical Observation of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in Head and Neck




Abstract
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma representing a diverse group of neoplasms may involve extranodal structures and can be encountered in head and neck occasionally.
We experienced 29 cases of pathologically diagnosed Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in the head and neck from Sen. 1989 to Aug. 1992.
@ES The results are as follows :
@EN 1. The mean age was 52.1 years, with male to female ratio of 1.4 to 1.0 in favor of males.
2. Predominant site of extranodal involvement was palatine tonsil in 7 cases.
3. Chief complaints were neck mass in 12 cases(45%), nasal obstruction in 6 cases(21%), swallowing difficulty in 4 cases(13%), and sore throat, hoarseness, indigestion etc.
4. According to Rappaport classification, the most common histologic type was diffuse histiocytic lymphoma in 18 cases(62%).
5. According to Ann Arbor clinical stage, 11 cases were stage I, 6 cases have stage II, 4 cases were stage III, and 8 cases stage IV.
6. The therapeutic trials were chemotherapy in 12 cases(41%), radiotherapy in 6 cases(21%), combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy in 5 cases(17%), chemotherapy after surgery in 2 cases(7%).
7. Survival rate was 87% in stage I and II, 36% in stage III and IV.
